When chilly winter days turn to tender spring bliss on this little Mediterranean gem I call home, Mallorca, they blossom back to life. They? The Almond Blossom.
With each arising of a new day, from mid-January to early March, what seem like dormant, spartan trees dot Mother Nature’s landscapes with vibrant hues of impeccable whites and soft pink. A symbol of Hope and Renewal. To the sound of Mallorca’s mountain echoes, towns encompassed by nature’s presence fall under the spell of this magical time of the year, and the joy for sun-kissed spring days grows. Sheep wander nature’s traces as they graze on grass, and their bells give way to their presence like a windswept whisper.

A Seasonal Awakening: The Almond Blossom's Role in Mallorca’s Spring
The cheer of the season and the Blossom’s impact are written on the faces of locals and visitors. Hearts skip a different beat as nature and humans alike celebrate the untamed beauty of their island with pride. Hey, I mean, Almond trees are, after all, messengers of beauty and resilience as they persevere Mallorca’s intricate climate. To those who call Mallorca home, this time of the year is a cherished season. The Almond season becomes part of our daily lives as its Blossom and scent are fused into the Mediterranean culinary world, embrace cultural roots, and are celebrated on festive occasions like the yearly ‘Fira de la Flor d’Ametller.’
Although Mallorca seems like a small island, it is actually quite big. Not to mention all the diverse facets it holds. So, where should you go see the Almond Blossom, you may ask yourself? Just now, for the first time in a long time, I venture through the island, its curvy mountain roads, and charming little towns as I inhale the season’s riches. At the end of the day, I feel as fulfilled and connected with Mallorca as I have in a long time.
So, where does the search for the Almond Blossom steeped in Mallorquin essence lead me?

Exploring Mallorca’s Tranquil Villages: Where Nature Meets Tradition
Driving off into Mallorca’s nature from one of the island’s bigger cities, Inca, the journey starts in the morning serenity of Selva. A little town with a big heart, magical, least to say, residing upon the rocky countryside of the Tramuntana Mountain Range. A slightly wavy road leads into the Mallorquin town. At its side, nature Blossoms as if Mother Nature rolled out the most exquisite of red carpets, leading the way into the arms of Mallorquin authenticity. A grand gate into Tramuntana’s spellbinding countryside and whisper of the riches that the Almond Blossom holds. Traditional Mallorquin architecture adorns the streets of this local town, known by few tourists. A full lung of purity and tranquillity exhales through its streets as you are fully introduced to the Mallorquin air—or should I say spirit?
Out the other side of Selva, the journey continues to Caimari, the proud town host of Mallorca’s famous yearly ‘Fira de l’Oliva,’ the prominent ‘olive festival.’ Today, the town is as quiet as I have ever experienced. Yet its Mallorquin window shutters and stone houses and the presence of the ‘Bandera de Caimari,’ meaning Caimari flag in English, voice the town’s cultural and historical connection to the olive. Now, no olives, but a Mallorquin coffee experience awaits. That’s right, one of the best ways to get a feel of the Mallorquin spirit is to simply sink into the authenticity of a morning coffee savoured in a genuine, classic Mallorquin café—there where the whole town meets.

From Village Streets to Mountain Roads: The Journey Through Mallorca’s Heart
Making the journey feel timeless, the picturesque roads through the Tramuntana Mountains lead past fincas and nature grounds adorned with the most sublime Almond trees, olive trees, and even the stark yellow contrast of the fluorescent mimosa flower. The roads are narrow, and traditional stone walls surrender against the unstoppable strength of roots. Past Lloseta onto Alaro, roads shift into a hilly trajectory of curves and turns, leading through the challenging grounds of the Tramuntana Mountain. Bye civilization, hello to the vibrant life of nature’s play. Living by the ocean, and with tourism talking about no other subject but that of beaches, I had honestly just merely forgotten how wholesome this face of Mallorca is and how enriching it feels to be in its presence. Oh, that sunlight dancing through the pine branches leaning over the road from both sides. Magical.
Just when I thought that I had rediscovered and remembered all of Mallorca’s gems, I navigate through Orient. A village residing in the heart of the Tramuntana Mountains, untouched by modern life and preserved in Mallorquin tradition. A town home to 300-400 residents. I guess if this place has a lot or little to offer lies in the eye of the beholder.
Reminiscing Spring: A Quiet Pause, Lost in the Beauty of Mallorca—The Day's Final Embrace
From the North to the West, we arrive at our last location, Bunyola. It is now two-thirty pm in Mallorca. That’s about equal to siesta time or, for some, a stop at the next bar. Eager to stretch her legs, my dog, Jenny, can’t wait to walk Bunyola’s streets, yet another town nestled at the feet of the Mediterranean island mountains.
Just like in the old days, we make our way to ‘Sa Plaça,’ a place of community and gathering in Mallorquin culture—meaning central town square in Catalan—for our lunch stop. Strolling through the town’s streets, childhood memories put an even brighter smile on my face. With that being said, as the church bells sound, the daily mail flutters in the wind upon one of the bar’s tables, holding a shandy in my hand (a mix of beer and lemonade) and a tostada residing in front of me ready to be savoured, I ask you—could this day have been any better?
